Riverside-Brookfield High School senior George Cervanka won the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.83 seconds at the Lake Forest Invitational on Saturday. He came in second in the 100 at 11.29, trailing only Zion-Benton’s Cortez Sawyer (11.01).

Last year, Cervanka qualified for state in both races with strong performances, 200 (22.20) and 100 (11.04), at the Lyons Township Sectional.

In the 800 at Lake Forest, senior Jason Noel came in second at 2 minutes, 4.9 seconds. Josh Ranft finished sixth (54.01) in the 400.

The quartet of Noel, David Keen, Chris Magno and Ranft earned third in the 3,200 with a time of 8:33.66. The Bulldogs finished sixth (52) in the team standings.

RBHS girls water polo

With comfortable victories over Schaumburg and Argo, the Bulldogs have won eight matches in a row and are 18-6 overall. On April 15, RBHS reeled off four wins and outscored its opponents 48-15 en route to winning the Elk Grove Village Invite.

“We are having a nice season,” RBHS coach Todd Fridrych said. “We have a great group of girls that work hard and play hard.”

Seniors Tatum Bruno and Chloe Marrello-Wandel and junior Leah Harazin are the team leaders. Bruno and Harazin are the top two scorers and Marrello-Wandel has excelled as the Bulldogs’ goalie.

RBHS hopes to extend its winning streak with matches at Waubonsie Valley and St. Charles East this week.

LTHS boys water polo

Hayden Claesson scored two goals to lead a balanced attack on offense as the visiting Lions edged Neuqua Valley 9-8. Goalie Ray Berg made several clutch saves to secure the victory.

RBHS boys volleyball

The Bulldogs split a pair of matches, defeating Fenton 25-8, 26-24 but losing to Hinsdale South 27-25, 25-23.

Against Fenton, Vejas Cuplinskas and DJ Degand had six kills each and Jonah Raith dished out 18 assists. Jason Bageanis (3 kills, 3 blocks, 2 aces), Lucas Reilley (10 digs) and Colby Campbell (4 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks) also contributed for RBHS (10-9).

Fenwick girls track & field

The Friars placed ninth (28 points) at the Lake Park Invitational. Margaret O’Brien won the 1,600 with a time of 5:15.95 seconds. The Friars’ Claire Gatermann, from Riverside, won pole vault at 10-9.

In the 3,200 relay, Fenwick finished third with a time of 10:02.72.

Trinity softball

The Blazers went 0-3 with losses against Sherrard, Metamora and East Peoria at the Metamora Showcase.

The Blazers’ best shot at victory occurred against East Peoria in their opening game. Trinity trailed the Raiders 3-1 after four innings until single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings put the former ahead 4-3. 

East Peoria scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game. Rachel McGovern and Sammy Nelson had two apiece. Nelson, who took the loss, pitched 6 2/3 innings.

In its last game, Nicole Romano had a team-high three hits and Juliana Morini added two hits and an RBI for Trinity in an 8-2 loss against Sherrard.
