The LaGrange-Brookfield Elementary School District 102 Board of Education is looking for applicants to fill a vacancy on the school board created by the resignation of Michael Thomas, who was appointed earlier this month to the Lyons Township High School District 204 Board of Education.

Those who wish to be considered to fill out the remainder of Thomas’s term, which lasts until May of 2021, should pick up an application and information packet from the school district’s headquarters at 333 N. Park Road, LaGrange Park or print the material from the district’s website.

Candidates for the school board must have lived in the district, which includes the southwest portion of Brookfield, for at least a year, be at least 18 years old and be a registered voter.

Applications to fill the vacancy must be received by no later than Oct. 28. The school board will interview applicants in closed session in early November and then pick someone to serve for the remaining months of Thomas’s term.

Jessica Mandra, of LaGrange Park, who ran unsuccessfully for the school board in 2019 said that she is applying to fill the vacancy.

Thomas was elected to the board in 2017 and was a leader in district’s Committee on Equity and Minority Achievement (CEMA). He was a thoughtful and diligent school board member who will be missed, Superintendent Kyle Schumacher said.

“He was always incredibly prepared, asked great questions, was somebody who championed the cause of all children but also was very much behind the work we were doing in the area of equity and diversity,” Schumacher said.
