Thomas Francis Carey, 87, of Riverside, died peacefully on Dec. 17, 2019. 

Mr. Carey was a partner in the law firm of Carey, Filter, White and Boland and he was the president/general manager of Hawthorne Race Course. 

An all-state quarterback at Mt. Carmel High School, Mr. Carey went on to play football for four years at the University of Notre Dame under legendary coaches Frank Leahy and Terry Brennan. He coached Mount Carmel High School football to four sectional titles as well as one city championship.

Mr. Carey was the son of the late Robert and Ann; the father of Mary (Mark) Kasch, John (Sue), Thomas (Shelly), Aileen, Annie (Derrick) Nel and Amber; the proud grandpa of Tommy, Billy, Danny, Jimmy, Joey, Aisling, Breighanna, Brendan, Jeremy, Trace, Ronin, Riordan, Teagan and Aspen; and the brother of Honey (Jim) Ehret, Jean (the late Clem) O’Neil, Judy (Mike) Curtin, Tony (Joan) Carey and Robert (Peg) Carey. The family has truly appreciated the wonderful, loving, loyal, kind caregivers Tom had: Rosa Diaz and Zully, Rudy and Evelyn Morales. 

A funeral Mass was held at St. Isaac Jogues Church in Niles on Dec. 22. Golf Road, Niles. Interment was private.
