William S. Sherman

Riverside deputy fire chief

William S. Sherman, 66, of Riverside, who served as a firefighter in Riverside for 45 years and was named deputy chief in 2015, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Dec. 19, 2019. 

Mr. Sherman was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and moved to Riverside where he attended Central School, Hauser Junior High and Riverside-Brookfield High School. 

He graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. Mr. Sherman served on the Riverside Fire Department for 45 years and full-time with the Arlington Heights Fire Department for 31 years until his retirement in 2008. He was the chairman of the Baby Skinner Foundation.

Mr. Sherman was the husband of Susan (nee Burke); the father of Ryan (Tia) Sherman, Kevin (Carly) Sherman and Kelly (Peter) Lyson; the grandfather to Tessa, Bryce, Tori, Jake, Brody and Riley; the son of Ruth Katherine (nee Horne) and the late David Hall Sherman; the brother of Dwight (Janet) Sherman and Susan (Steve) Sherman-Broyles; the son-in-law of Mary Burke and the late Robert Burke; the brother-in-law of Kathy Clarke, Mary Jo (Tom) McCloskey and Peg Burke; and an uncle to Danny McCloskey, Maggie (Andy) McCloskey-Bax, Molly McCloskey, Katy (Jon) Clayshulte, John (Anna) Clarke, Robert Clarke, Joe Clarke, Tim Clarke, Christopher (Lauren) Broyles, Cory Broyles, Sydney (Stephen) Neal, Spencer Sherman and Ashley (Josh) Piper. 

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Friday, Dec. 27 from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Riverside Town Hall, 27 Riverside Road, Riverside. 

In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Riverside Firefighters Association or the Riverside Historical Commission, 27 Riverside Rd., Riverside, 60546.
